Bud Abbott, the American actor known for being one half of the comedy duo Abbott and Costello, had a net worth of $50 thousand at the time of his death in 1974. Adjusted for inflation, that’s equivalent to around $260 thousand today.
Abbott was born into a show business family in Asbury Park, New Jersey in 1897. He started out working in box offices before becoming a comedian and producer of burlesque shows on Broadway. He teamed up with Lou Costello in 1935 and the duo created the legendary routine “Who’s on First?”
Abbott and Costello went on to make 36 films together and were extremely popular during World War II. They also launched a radio show in 1942 and a live television series. After their contract was terminated in 1955, the pair split up and Costello passed away in 1959.
Affected by financial difficulties, Abbott attempted to find new partners but was not as successful. He was declared the best straight man in the comedy business by Groucho Marx and received stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Motion Picture, Television, and Radio. During the early part of their career, they split earnings 60-40 in favor of Abbott, but eventually settled on a 60-40 split in favor of Costello. The duo reportedly earned around $25 million from their films alone, which is equivalent to $360 million in today’s dollars, or $180 million per person.
IRS troubles lead to financial ruin for Abbott and Costello
In the 1950s, the IRS revoked $500,000 in tax exemptions for Abbott, causing him to sell his house and end his early retirement. Costello also faced financial troubles, though not as severe. Both had to sell their mansions and the rights to many of their popular films to cover their debts. In his later years, Abbott publicly announced his financial struggles and even asked for donations from his former fans.
